The political and ideological subordination of the press during the Ceaușescu régime

Romanian Journal of Journalism and Communication, issue 4 (46), year IX (XIII), 2014

section: Journalism

pages: 5-15

abstract

Subjected to a strict control by the Party, exercised by the state monopoly imposed on all sources of information and opinion, the press in Romania was the instrument used by the propaganda for the consolidation and legitimation of the communist ideology. Converted into real weapons in the hands of Power, the forms of communication had the mission and the task to educate the masses, to mobilize them to fulfill certain political or economic objectives, to discredit enemies and to glorify the achievements of the regime. In their need to persuade and influence the people, to change their attitude and behavior, Romania's Communist leaders have used the means of communication and dissemination of the news to inform, to transmit and to inoculate the Communist ideology. Printed press was the most convenient means of the communist preachers in their action for ideologizing of the masses.
